Incognito at WorldPortJazz

On Saturday the 28th of June 2003 the moment was finally there: Incognito was playing in my hometown, Rotterdam, the most beautiful city of The Netherlands. Feelings of pride were and are still there and I cannot thank the organization and Incognito enough for this night to remember.

Of course, the location says it all. Situated at the base of the most beautiful bridge in Holland, the Erasmus bridge, on the so-called Kop van Zuid between glorious buildings like the Hotel New York and Warehouses De Meesteren and also close to new developments like the New Luxor theatre and the controversial KPN building.
Looking from the base of the bridge it already looks impressive. Knowing that the view from the other side is even more spectacular ...

... and here is a small part of that view from the festival area on the Holland Amerikakade. Part of the festival area was also the original departure hall of the Holland America Line. Next to the fact that there is a lot of history it is also a gorgeous location for theater and music performances.

In fact, this is a perfect location for festivals like this and I sincerely hope that the organization will be able to continue this festival in the years to come.

To the right of this piece of text is an example of how nice the location is. It is hard for me to imagine that the performing artists do not get a kick out of it. It is so completely different from the canals and old houses of Amsterdam. The mentality of the visitors was different as well: everything was very relaxed, but that was partly due to the fact that the WorldPortJazz Festival was not sold out. On the one hand that was a pity, because a lot of people missed out on some good stuff. On the other hand it gave this festival something very intimate, something that is rare these days, because concert promoters like Mojo (Clear Channel) only engage in a gig if it can be sold out.

The photo below is of Terry Callier, who performed on Friday June 27, and which I wouldn't want to let you miss out on. Reason one is that Terry cooperated with Bluey on his most recent CD. Reason two is that I am proud of the fact that this great man performed in Rotterdam.

OK, back to Saturday. Before we even went to see and listen to any of the concerts we fortified the inner man/woman.

Clockwise, starting at 8 o'clock we see Talitha, Patty, Ronald, Daan, Monique and Rob.

Of course I am the photographer on duty, so I am to be seen nowhere at all, which is a good thing, because, god, I am irresistable ;-)
